Colorado Governor Declares May 20th Turks and Caicos Islands Friendship Day
Denver, Colorado, United States of America (May 21st, 2026) — The State of Colorado has officially proclaimed May 20th as Turks and Caicos Islands Friendship Day.
Governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, made the declaration as he welcomed Premier Honourable Charles Washington Misick and a contingent from the Turks and Caicos Islands for the Denver leg of the Premier’s Roadshow.
The proclamation was delivered during a reception hosted by the Governor at the Governor’s Residence in Denver. In making the Proclamation on behalf of the State of Colorado, Governor Polis said they are very excited to explore and build Colorado’s ties with the Turks and Caicos Islands.
In his address, Premier Misick said while the two destinations may not seem to have much in common, they share many similarities.
“At first glance we appear to be worlds apart. One rises proudly one mile above sea level surrounded by majestic mountains and four distinct seasons. Turks and Caicos Islands sit gently at sea level surrounded by turquoise waters, white sand beaches and year-round sunshine. But beneath those differences lies a powerful similarity; both Denver and the Turks and Caicos Islands are destinations built on lifestyle, aspiration and connectivity. Both of our economies thrive because people choose not just to visit us, but to experience our way of life,” the Premier said.
In his greeting, Minister of Tourism, Honourable Zhavargo Jolly, urged Denver residents to visit Turks and Caicos to experience world class diving in Grand Turk.
“I was presented with a fact today that the city of Denver has the highest number of certified divers in the U.S. We want you to know that the Mile High City has a natural partnership with the nation’s capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands which is Grand Turk. Off the coast of Grand Turk, we have the most beautiful diving scene because the water and seafloor drops to well over a mile. So, I am challenging the mile High City to come to the Mile Deep City of Grand Turk,” he said, eliciting laughter from invited guests.
Reflecting on the grand proclamation, Stacy Cox, TCHTA CEO, said, “The proclamation of Turks and Caicos Islands Friendship Day in Colorado represents the kind of meaningful relationship-building that sits at the heart of tourism. Beyond promoting the destination, this Roadshow is about creating lasting connections between people, industries, and communities, while showcasing the warmth and investment potential of the Turks and Caicos Islands.”
The Denver reception drew senior officials, business leaders, aviation partners, and members of the diplomatic and tourism communities, including Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera; Colorado State Representative Matt Soper of House District 54; Esther Lee Leach, Director of Policy & Legislation, Denver Department of Public Safety; Erin Kuhn, Consul of the UK Government Office in Denver; Brian Roth, Regional Sales Director of United Airlines; Balan Nair, President and CEO of Liberty Latin America; Michael Coakley, Vice President and Head of Communications of Liberty Latin America; and Denver community leader Marcela de la Mar.
