WORLD CLASS OPEN WATER SWIM RACING COMES TO GRACE BAY
Grace Bay on the north shore of Providenciales ("Provo") in the Turks & Caicos Islands has long been the venue for many water sports, but, surprisingly, never an organized swim race--until now. On July 10, 2010, Grace Bay and the island of Provo will host the first annual Turks & Caicos "Race for the Conch" 1 Mile Eco-SeaSwim. The honor is long overdue. The impossibly blue waters, soft sandy bottoms, and flat-as-a-lake surface protected by the third largest barrier reef in the world offer ideal conditions for open water swim racing, one of the fastest growing participatory sports in the world. Indeed, open water swim racing is the newest Olympic event, and was featured for the first time in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
With easy air travel from the US, Canada, and Europe, Provo is poised to be a world-class destination for competitive and recreational swimmers alike to challenge themselves. Already, the race has already attracted super star ocean racer Marcos Diaz from the Dominican Republic who is also a UN Goodwill Ambassador promoting global understanding through swimming. But the race is also designed to be inclusive, so that all swimmers have the opportunity to experience an open water 1 mile event and do their personal best in a benign environment.

A good race should stand for something as well. And so the "Race for the Conch" will also call attention to need to protect reefs and the oceans around them. More than almost any place on the planet, the Turks & Caicos depends on these treasures for its well-being, so it’s only fitting that we make this a true "Eco-SeaSwim." We are very proud that the race has been certified by Green Globe as an ecologically responsible event. In addition, the race will raise money for charities that help and protect children in the Turks & Caicos and Haiti.

Excitement about the race is high in Provo, and everyone looks forward to a great turnout of swimmers and spectators on July 10.
